Newborns and Children

Dr. Rosen treats newborns and children of all ages. “As the twig is bent so does the tree incline,” said Dr. Sutherland, DO, almost one hundred years ago to demonstrate the importance of healing birth trauma or problems in children. Children are very fluid and resilient in healing, but when complications of delivery or trauma and illness in childhood are not healed, integration of these patterns and a compromised way of functioning for the body may follow. This can lead to prolonged or recurrent symptoms and vulnerabilities to other conditions. An example of this is in a vacuum assisted delivery resulting in neck or cranial strain, but any prolonged or difficult birth can lead to strain. Even in Caesarean section, the challenges that lead to one being necessary can make treatment quite beneficial.

In addition to helping resolve acute trauma, Osteopathy can also help if problems are lingering or recurrent, especially when drugs or surgery are not preferred forms of treatment. A good example of this is when suffering recurrent ear infections. Improving the mechanical ability of the surrounding skull area assists the inner ear to pump and drain, restores better fluid motion, circulation, lymphatic movement, and nerve innervation. This leads to improved healing and often prevents upper respiratory infection without it progressing to ear infections (Otitis Media).

Through the use of gentle traditional and cranial Osteopathic treatment, Dr. Rosen feels for both the position of the anatomy, but also how it is moving and functioning in a very dynamic and fluid way. Dr. Rosen then synchronizes with the patterns and fluid movement of the tissues to find a place of balance and ease for the body to release and improve function.

Examples of symptoms that can be helped with gentle Osteopathic treatment are: newborn trauma, plagiocephaly (flattened or misshapen skull), difficulty nursing, recurrent ear infections, colic, concussion, sports injury, developmental delay, headache, neck and back pain, and more. Dr. Rosen is happy to discuss individual cases, so feel free to contact the office if you have any questions regarding your child. Parents or guardians will stay with the child throughout the entire gentle treatment.

Dr. Rosen also treats pregnant women to help them tolerate common symptoms of pregnancy better, but also to assist in preparing them for an easier delivery and recovery from childbirth. Recovering from childbirth can be a challenging experience. While a wonderful miracle of life, childbirth can involve trauma. Osteopathic treatment is an effective way to help heal and recover when there may be strain to the pelvis, sacrum, back and neck. It also helps in the body’s physiologic transition from pregnancy to nursing and caring for a baby.
